Handmade Wooden Katana
- Description
Custom handmade katana using Oak, Maple and Cedar woods.
The blade is made from Oak and Maple weaved together to create the "Hamon" (the blade pattern). The blade pattern is developed during the hardening process of an actual katana, so that the "Mune" or back of the blade is a softer steel than the "Ha" or edge of the blade. I used Hard Maple for the Ha which has a hardness level that is greater than the Oak used for the Mune.
As the katana is made from wood and doesn't have much weight, I choose Cedar for the handle ("Tsuka"). As Cedar is a very light wood, this gives the katana a good balance.
The "Tsuba", or guard, and the "Habaki", the small piece in front of the guard to lock the katana into the sheath, are both made from Oak.
To match the handle, I also used Cedar as the wood for the "Saya" or Sheath.
The stand shown is included. Made from a Live-Edge Oak log.
